Interior of the university dormitories in Olomouc

About project

The proposed complex of university dormitory buildings in Olomouc is connected into a single campus thanks to a functional parterre and a number of permeable community places and courtyards. The urban courtyard thus closely communicates with the tranquil courtyard and connects them together. This ensures overall integrity and belonging to the urban ringstrasse. A welcoming environment and time spent outside is a priority and a principle for us to take the quality of student accommodation to the next level, as is a thoughtful interior that offers different levels of privacy, sharing and study facilities.

Olomouc is famous for its parks, squares and green belts that create the character of the city. The student halls of residence build on this green network and become part of the city’s ecosystem. The gardens, roof terraces and greenery around the building not only add aesthetic value, but also offer places for relaxation and socialising, which is crucial for living in a modern city.

We place the same emphasis on the interior environment of buildings as we do on the public space. Interiors are designed to support the daily rhythm of students, natural gatherings and the opportunity to retreat.

Interior as an extension of the city

The interior of the university halls of residence in Olomouc is based on the character of the city itself, a place where historical layers naturally meet young student energy. The design works with the contrast of urban dynamics and a sense of calm. The harsher materials in the common areas refer to the public space of the city, while softer lines, textiles and natural motifs create an atmosphere of safety and garden.

The entrance hall is designed as a natural continuation of the street, an open, lively and multifunctional space with a café, coworking space and honesty market that becomes the everyday centre of the life of the college. The colours, brick elements and textures refer to the historical footprint of Olomouc, while the graphics and street art inspired art interventions bring a contemporary cultural level. The interior is thus not a neutral background, but an active part of the project’s identity.

Community and shared life

The main theme of the interior is community and shared life. The spaces are designed not just as transit but as natural places for meeting, studying and relaxing, from lounge areas and study rooms to communal kitchens and clubhouses. The interior develops the idea of an open courtyard, where different functions flow seamlessly together and the whole feels airy and connected. Greenery plays an important role here, softening the more raw architecture, bringing a sense of balance and promoting psychological comfort.

The design includes a wide range of shared features to support a healthy and active lifestyle. Laundry rooms, bike rooms, a fitness area, a library with study room, games rooms and a small cinema hall form a full infrastructure for everyday life. At the same time, the concept responds to the diversity of users, from local and international students to PhD students to teachers with families or short-term visitors, and works with the variability of space and different levels of privacy and sharing so that everyone can find their own rhythm and level of engagement with the community.
