Universities: space for education, research and the future

We design modern university buildings that meet the needs of today’s education, science and social life. We believe that a quality academic environment can foster creativity, collaboration and wellbeing for students and staff. For us, efficient layout, sustainable operations, openness to the public, and sensitive placement in the context of a campus or urban fabric are key. Our campus buildings combine cutting-edge technology, healthy indoor environments and flexible spaces for lectures, research, informal gatherings and recreation.

A functional and inspiring environment for universities

The architecture of universities today has a much broader role than simply providing a space for learning. Modern universities need to be open and flexible environments that foster interdisciplinary collaboration while offering spaces for relaxation and informal gatherings. We think about the flow of people, the natural structuring of space and clear orientation so that students and academics can concentrate fully on their activities. The integration of natural light, quality acoustics and a healthy microclimate play a key role, contributing to better concentration and overall comfort. We design universities to provide inspiring facilities not only for learning, but also for innovation and social life.

Sustainability as a standard for academic buildings

Today’s universities have a responsibility not only for education but also for the environmental footprint they leave behind. That’s why our design emphasizes energy efficiency, the use of renewable resources and thoughtful water management. Green roofs, retention systems, material recycling or adaptive façade systems are solutions that reduce operating costs while improving the quality of the indoor environment. Sustainable universities are a given for us – buildings that stand the test of time, meet demanding operational requirements and inspire the next generation.

Universities as part of the city

Many universities are not closed institutions, but open centres of action where academic and public life intersect. Our goal is to create buildings that interact with the surrounding neighborhoods and are naturally connected to the urban infrastructure. We complement university campuses with public spaces, plazas or green spaces that attract not only students but also city residents. University architecture thus contributes to the overall urban development and creates new communities.

Flexibility for current and future needs

The needs of universities change over time – curricula evolve, technology advances and teaching methods transform. That’s why we design university spaces with flexibility in mind. Modular classrooms, variable furnishings, open laboratories and multi-functional halls make it easy to adapt to new requirements. Universities designed in this way can respond to change without the need for major structural interventions, which extends their lifetime and reduces maintenance costs.

An example from our practice – New teaching centre at the 3rd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University

New teaching centre at the 3rd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University is to use complex interactive simulations for multidisciplinary education and research in healthcare. The facility is being constructed on the site of an original building that no longer met operational requirements. The dominant feature of the interior is a connecting staircase across the floors that encourages natural movement and student interaction. The building is set in the context of the State Institute of Health campus and responds sensitively to the surrounding buildings and greenery. Strip windows complemented by a green façade with built-in planters of GRC concrete promote sustainability – residual water is used for irrigation. The design combines functionality, aesthetics and respect for the environment to create a modern and inspiring facility for university education.
