About project

In the architectural competition for the artistic design of the Prague Uprising Monument and the landscape design of the public spaces on the Interbrigade Square, we won 2nd place in cooperation with Dušan Záhoranský. The new monument should serve as a symbolic reminder of the historical event and at the same time express the important values and ideals associated with this significant moment in Czech history. The aim is to create a harmonious environment linking history, culture and modern life in the city.

Pomník Pražského povstání

The proposed revitalization of the Interbrigade Square in Prague is based on three basic pillars that aim not only to complete Antonín Engel’s original visionary vision, but also to build on the historical context and create an active and sustainable public space for gathering and relaxation. The site also has commemorative significance and commemorates the fallen heroes of the Prague Uprising who demonstrated extraordinary courage. Our vision for the public space is active and sustainable, whether it is the use of local materials, green infrastructure or the inclusion of artworks that reference historical events and the symbolism of togetherness and courage.

A striking element is the work itself, the curve of the barricade as a “faithful radio wave” rising from the road and at the same time a ribbon connecting residents and citizens without distinction. The element, which we worked on together with sculptor Dušan Záhoranský, is part of the composition of the square. The monument to the Prague Uprising rises physically and in words, evoking a period in history when freedom and democracy had to be defended. The texts used refer to the authentic appeals that the resistance movement shared through the underground press or Czech Radio broadcasts. It brings its symbolism of togetherness and courage to the present day.

The revitalization of the original concept of the park-like Interbrigade Square in Prague represents a living public space involved in Engel’s urbanism and the green belt surrounding Bubeneč. A meeting place where people can sit and find shade. A place that is open to both private and public activities, free play for children from the nearby school, neighbourhood meetings and educational and community events. A generous central space of semi-permeable glorite surface provides both a sunny and pleasant shaded seating area. The original composition of the site allows it to be divided into a more intimate, but heavily used, southern section and a more exposed section with the Prague Uprising Monument.
