The square: a living public space for encounter, movement and history

We design the square as an open, functional and inclusive space that is accessible to all generations. Our goal is for people to be able to move around, but also to stop, rest and take in the history of the place. Our emphasis is on the legibility of the space – visitors should immediately understand its layout and main functions. We always design the square with accessibility and intuitive orientation in mind so that parents with strollers, seniors, cyclists and people with limited mobility can move around comfortably. For us, the square is not just a transport hub or a transfer point, but a place that has the ability to connect – different parts of the city, residents, visitors and cultural layers of the past and present. We see it as a central element of the city’s identity, a space where the everyday meets the extraordinary. That’s why we work with urban greenery, water features, screening, art installations and high-quality furniture. Every detail has a purpose – from benches that invite people to meet, to paving that relates to the historic character of the site.

Respect for the history and context of the place

Every square is a carrier of historical memory. That is why we always start with a careful analysis of its development, original composition and historical landmarks. We either preserve these elements or enter into a sensitive dialogue with them. We take into account the scale of the surrounding buildings, the rhythm of the facades and the proportions of the public space. At the same time, we create new solutions that respond to contemporary needs – from modern infrastructure to climate resilience. Historical layers can be reflected in the materials used, the morphology of the furnishings or in artistic elements that refer to the past of the place. This blend of tradition and innovation ensures that the square looks authentic and natural, while meeting the demands of the 21st century. century.

Functionality and everyday use

A square is alive when it offers a variety of uses throughout the day and year. That’s why we’re incorporating flexible zones into the design that can change as the need arises – one day for a farmers’ market, another for a concert or community gathering. The placement of shade, wind protection and ample seating are also important considerations. We also consider the urban microclimate – quality greenery and water features help cool the space in the summer months, making it more attractive on hot days. In winter, we work with the possibility of installing temporary elements such as markets or ice rinks.

Example.

Our winning design in the architectural competition revitalized the public space near Masaryk Station and turned it into a lively town square. We transformed an originally undeveloped space without a clear identity into a harmonious place that connects the history of the location with the modern needs of Prague’s citizens. The key design principles were the movement of people, air flow, access to water, inspiration from the historical context and maximum clarity of the space. We removed visual and physical barriers, creating an open environment where people can move and meet freely. The square is now a place where the daily bustle of commuters mixes with leisure activities and cultural events.

The square as the heart of the city

A well-designed square becomes the centre of urban life – a place where people meet, markets, festivals and spontaneous meetings are held. In our projects, we make sure that this space is welcoming day and night, safe, well-lit and accessible to all. At the same time, we understand that the square is the city’s calling card – a place that is perceived by every visitor and that co-creates their impression. That’s why we look for solutions that stand up to both aesthetic and functional challenges, while promoting community cohesion.
