Public space: places between buildings where urban life is created

We understand public space as one of the key building blocks of a city – it is the framework in which the everyday life of its inhabitants takes place, as well as the space where cultural and social identity is formed. It is not just the physical surfaces between buildings, but a living organism that connects people, encourages encounters and allows natural movement. It can take the form of a bustling square, a quiet avenue, a modern piazzetta in front of a cultural institution or an intimate memorial site. Each such space has its role and its audience. Our goal is to design public spaces that are functional, aesthetic, safe and sustainable – and that everyone can find their place in them.

Composition and context as a basis for design

Every public space starts with a thorough reading of the site. We examine the historical layers, the urban context and the natural lines of human movement. We respect the genius loci and look for ways to incorporate it into the design – whether through materials, landscape elements or the preservation of key vistas. We work not only with architecture, but also with the landscape: trees, lawns, water bodies and other natural elements that animate the space and help it breathe. But just as important are the small details, such as the quality of paving, the type of urban furniture or the rhythm of public lighting, which together add to the atmosphere.

Public space as a carrier of identity

A well-designed public space has the ability to put a face to a city. It becomes a landmark, a place with which residents associate personal memories and, for visitors, the first contact with the character of the city. When working on such projects, we focus on ensuring that the space tells a story – often referring to history, significant events or the people who have lived and worked in the area. We believe that the aesthetic quality of a space should go hand in hand with its social function.

Social functions and openness

Public space must be inclusive and accessible to all – regardless of age, physical ability or social status. That’s why we are committed to accessibility, diversity of use and flexibility. One place can be a marketplace in the morning, a space to relax in the afternoon and a backdrop for a cultural event in the evening. When designing, we work with the idea that the space should be alive 24 hours a day, all year round.

Materials and landscape design

The choice of materials and landscape elements is not only a question of aesthetics, but also of durability and sustainability. We prefer natural materials and surfaces that age well and withstand stress. Trees, lawns, water areas or flower beds not only beautify the space but also regulate the microclimate and improve the comfort of the users.

Example: the Prague Exhibition Centre

The project of the public space in front of the Industrial Palace at the Prague Exhibition Grounds shows how a sensitive combination of historical heritage and contemporary needs can create a harmonious whole. The design defines the architectural layout of the forecourt and specifies a clear palette of materials to be used. It includes a comprehensive landscape design and the addition of urban furniture, lighting and other elements that enhance its functionality and aesthetics. The main axis of the design is guided by the symmetry of the Industrial Palace and follows the axis of Dukelských Hrdinů Street. This principle is also reflected in the width of the newly designed tree planting and the water feature – the swimming pool – which follows the rhythm of the street profile. The central paved area functions as a paved “carpet” that leads visitors directly to the palace, from where they can make their way to the Křižík Fountain or the pavilions.

Our other major projects include, for example, the Prague Market Hall Interspaces. Or Masaryk Station Square.
