Parks: urban nature designed with respect for water, landscape and people

We design parks as vibrant, resilient and diverse urban landscapes that combine ecological functions with the everyday needs of residents. For us, a park is not just a leisure space, but a strategic element of urban infrastructure – a place that mitigates the impacts of climate change, promotes biodiversity and creates space for gathering. We work with the concepts of restoring natural processes(restore), returning species diversity(rewild) and actively connecting with urban life(reconnect). We take into account the natural character of the site – from the topography to the native vegetation – and integrate it into the design. For us, water, trees and soil are the basic building blocks, which we treat sensitively and sustainably.

Nature Restoration – Restore

The first step in our approach is to restore natural processes. We are returning watercourses, wetlands and natural flood regimes to parks to improve water retention and cool the urban microclimate. We restore native vegetation structure and create conditions for the return of native plant and animal species. This approach not only promotes ecological stability but also enhances the aesthetic value of the park – the naturally changing landscape provides visitors with a different experience in each season.

The return of biodiversity – Rewild

Rewilding is seen as actively promoting the return of species diversity. We create quiet zones in parks where nature is given space to grow according to its own rules. We combine open grassy areas with denser greenery, copses and coppice, providing a haven for birds, pollinators and other animals. The designs also include educational elements – information boards, nature trails and interactive installations that show visitors how the urban ecosystem works. In this way, we link nature conservation with education and active public participation.

Connecting to urban life – Reconnect

For us, parks are not only an oasis of nature, but also part of the city’s social infrastructure. That’s why we link our designs to the surrounding neighbourhoods, cycle paths and public transport. We ensure barrier-free access and a well-thought-out network of paths for pedestrians and cyclists. We create zones for different types of activities – from recreational areas to sports facilities to spaces for community events and cultural programming. Each park has its own identity, but the common denominator is openness and versatility.

Example: the Rohan and Libeň islands

The area of 56 hectares from the Hlávkov Bridge to the tips of the Libeňské kos (Libeň Scythes) will be extensively transformed in the coming years. In cooperation with the Dutch studio DELVA, we took part in an international architectural competition to revitalise this unique riverscape. We also built our concept on three pillars – Restore, Rewild, Reconnect. We are restoring the Vltava’s natural channel and water arms, designing extensive meadow and forest habitats for the return of biodiversity, while creating new pedestrian and cycling links to the city. The design combines ecological value with recreational potential, creating a space that will serve people and nature for generations.

Parks as a strategic tool of the city

A well-designed park has the ability to change the quality of life in a city. It brings cooling in the summer months, protects against flooding, cleans the air, and offers space for sport, relaxation and community gatherings. At the same time, it reinforces the identity of a place – it becomes part of the daily routes of residents and a destination for weekend walks. We see parks as an investment in the future – infrastructure that links ecological, social and cultural functions. When nature and the city come into balance, it creates an environment that benefits people and the planet.
